On March 4, 2026, in Bujumbura, the launch of the Academy of Champions of Hope, initiated by the Research and Career Development Center, RECADEC East Africa, marked a turning point for the youth of Burundi, the DRC and Rwanda. More than a program, this Academy opens a door to the future and reveals a generation determined to innovate and build. The project is implemented in partnership with UNFPA and the United Nations Information Centre (CINU), and in collaboration with Université Lumière de Bujumbura, Université des Grands Lacs, Université Polytechnique de Gitega, Burundi Career Bridge and Community Support Center (DRC).

East Africa holds one of the greatest human potentials of the 21st century. By 2050, one in five workers worldwide will be African, according to the IMF. Yet opportunities do not always keep pace with talent. It is within this gap that RECADEC East Africa has chosen to act. “We want to transform these 30 entrepreneurs into inspiring role models for their peers,” said Dr. Yves Ndayikunda, President of RECADEC East Africa.

Over the course of twelve months, the selected youth will receive high‑level training in leadership, management, innovation, personal development and relational intelligence, along with mentorship provided by the African diaspora. UNFPA emphasized the importance of a holistic approach. “Beyond business, we integrate sexual and reproductive health, gender equality and social cohesion,” highlighted its Resident Representative, Mr. Judicaël Elidje.

Burundi Career Bridge, a strategic partner, reaffirmed its commitment. Its Director, Kelhia Keza, reminded participants that “redefining the narrative of the Great Lakes region begins with young people who create, innovate and transform their environment.”

The Academy aligns with major regional and continental development frameworks: Vision Burundi 2040, the EAC Agenda, Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals. It aims to serve as a lever for transformation, a space of excellence and a springboard for a generation called to become the builders of a new global order. RECADEC East Africa reaffirms its commitment to supporting, connecting and inspiring young people so they may become true Champions of Hope.
