At RECADEC East Africa, we believe education is the key to transforming societies and building inclusive economies. This week, we took an important step toward establishing a strategic partnership between Canada and East Africa, aimed at strengthening higher education, fostering research collaboration, and driving innovation.

A High-Level Meeting at the Canadian Parliament

Together with our partner, the Distance Education Network (REFAD), we had the honor of meeting the Honorable Mona Fortier at the Canadian Parliament.

This meeting focused on critical topics:

  • Internationalization of Higher Education: Building bridges between East African and Canadian universities to share best practices.
  • Collaborative Research: Developing joint projects to address socio-economic challenges.
  • Employability and Entrepreneurship: Equipping young people with skills to actively contribute to economic growth.

Honorable Mona Fortier’s Remarks

Honorable Mona Fortier reaffirmed her support for this initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between Canada and East Africa in education. She noted that she had met with REFAD and RECADEC East Africa to explore opportunities offered by this partnership.

She highlighted the strategic role of education in economic development and the need to build a future where young Africans benefit from university training aligned with international standards. For her, this project is not just about sharing knowledge—it is a genuine collaboration aimed at creating concrete solutions and lasting opportunities.

Mona Fortier currently serves as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, responsible for Canada’s diplomacy and international relations, which gives this meeting significant weight in the context of Canada–Africa relations.

REFAD: A Strategic Partner

We are proud to recognize the essential role of the Distance Education Network (REFAD) in this initiative. Its expertise in digital education and commitment to the internationalization of higher learning make it an indispensable strategic partner. Together, we share a common ambition: to open new horizons for African students and researchers through innovative and inclusive solutions.

Why This Partnership Matters

This is not simply a transfer of knowledge—it is an authentic collaboration to build concrete solutions and sustainable opportunities. Together, we aim to:

  • Promote inclusive and innovative university programs.
  • Encourage digital learning and applied research.
  • Create new prospects for African students and researchers.

✅ Early Results

This meeting marks a turning point for the internationalization of higher education in East Africa. Among the immediate outcomes:

  • Validation of the strategic partnership between RECADEC East Africa and REFAD, paving the way for joint projects.
  • Political commitment confirmed by Honorable Mona Fortier, ensuring institutional support for implementation.
  • Planning of concrete initiatives: East Africa will be featured at the upcoming REFAD Grand Gathering at the University of Moncton, with discussions on collaborative research and digital learning.
