The Research and Career Development Center (RECADEC) seeks to transform East African higher education by implementing innovative and evidence-based practices to tackle youth unemployment caused by a lack of market-relevant and entrepreneurial skills.
Despite the higher learning institutions in east Africa producing thousands of graduates annually, the misalignment between academic curricula and market demands has left nearly 50.5% of young graduates unemployed (FKE, 2023). This disconnect not only deprives industries of skilled talent but also stifles economic growth, exacerbating youth disillusionment in a region where over 60% of the population is under 25 years old, one of the highest youth demographics globally. Thus, the present situation has resulted in the region being unable to harness the demographic dividends that come with a growing, educated youthful population.

Subsequently, RECADEC intends to bridge the gap between academic training and industry needs by implementing a comprehensive program aimed at enhancing educational outcomes. Our program focuses on four pillars: interdisciplinary job market research, capacity building for educators and institutions, advocating for inclusive and adaptive education policies, and facilitating internships and volunteer opportunities for graduates. By focusing on these four pillars, RECADEC wants to equip the Eastern African youth with a market-ready skills, relevant entrepreneurial mindset, and promote regional economic resilience.

In the first two years the project is expected to benefit over 15,000 students, educators and policymakers across East Africa. The program will also foster long-term partnerships with academic institutions, private and public sectors employers and policy makers for sustained impact.

By investing in the initiative, collaborators and partners will have contributed to shaping a generation of skilled, adaptable youth who are ready to lead East Africa into sustainable economic growth and innovation.
